ASPARAGUS grown in the Vale of Evesham could be sold for as much as £1,000 a box when the annual auction takes place.

The locally grown asparagus, known as 'sparrow grass', is well known for its quality and flavour and considered a local delicacy.

Connoisseurs will be bidding at the annual asparagus auctions at the Fleece Inn in Bretforton, near Evesham, on Sunday, May 26, and Sunday, June 9, both at 8.30pm.

"Nothing brings visitors from around the country to Bretforton like our annual auctions," said Peter Clarke, licensee of the Fleece Inn.

All produce will be donated by local fruit and vegetable businesses, and Colin Jelfs ,a local retailer, will be acting as the event's auctioneer.

Proceeds from the auctions will go to the village's Silver Band and St Leonard's church, next door to the pub.

"Although the true British asparagus season only lasts about six weeks, it is the time when the vegetable is at its very best and is well worth waiting for," said Mr Clarke.
