A PATRIOTIC punter will win £100,000 if England defy the odds and lift the World Cup.

He shocked William Hill staff in Kidderminster after laying a £10,000 stake on Sven-Goran Eriksson's injury-ravaged squad in the tournament, which starts in nine days in Japan and South Korea.

"Business is steadily building up as the tournament comes closer," said shop manager Stuart Wood. "But this came as a bit of a bolt from the blue. The man was a stranger to us, but he seemed confident.

"It was even more of a surprise when he paid in cash - all in £50 and £20 notes."

Mr Wood said most punters were putting their money on joint-favourites France and Italy, at 4-1.
