YOUNG people about to leave school have been on an activity day designed to get them thinking about their future.

As part of the Active Now programme run by Connexions, Kidderminster - part of Worcestershire education authority's careers service - Year 11 students from across Wyre Forest went to Youth House, Bromsgrove Street, Kidderminster, for a sports themed day earlier this month.

About 75 15 to 16-year-olds from a variety of district schools meet once a month and previous days have included a trip to the Wyre Forest to meet the rangers. E Double, Phil Young and Flow take to the decks at Kidderminster's Youth House.

"A lot of them are switched off and we're trying to switch them back on," explained Nicola North, team manager at Connexions.

"The traditional careers week we've always done means if people didn't turn up we were unable to reach them. Now we do careers guidance out in the field.

"It's very rewarding."

Mrs North added: "We've had 100 per cent attendance. It's really about motivating and focussing their ideas, and about getting people active. It's been a total success.

Last Tuesday's event featured a pottery workshop and offered the chance for budding DJs to try their hand at using decks.
