BATSMAN Barry Clements took his season's run aggregate to 265 as Evesham swept to the top of Division Two of the Worcestershire League last Saturday.

Clements hit an unbeaten 54 and has only been out once in the opening four league outings and he is already eyeing the league run record of 837!

Saturday's match, sponsored by Allchurch Bailey, saw captain Jon Gregory ask Lye to bat first on a dampish Avon Street track.

Runs were hard to come by as the home bowlers exerted an early stranglehold with the returning Ian Prince sending down 14 overs into a stiff breeze at a cost of just 25 runs.

Excellent fielding further restricted the visitors and their innings closed on 172-7.

By the time, openers Gary Lewis and Gregory arrived at the crease, batting had become a lot easier and the former continued his good form with 30.

Gregory was an early casualty bur replacement Nick Collins helped set the stage for Clements with a fine knock of 27.

When both departed, it was left to Clements and the explosive hitting of Paul Jones to blast Evesham to their third win. Jones is proving a menace to all bowlers and his rapid 46 ensured the target was passed comfortably.

The next day, runs from Lewis, Clements, Will Bailey, Warren Irvine and Quinn Jones helped Evesham rattle up a daunting 244-6 against Sunday visitors Halesowen.

The Birmingham League outfit made a steady response but Darren Key (3-18) and two wickets for 16-year-old Matt Selby restricted their reply to 192-9.

Paul Jones and Gregory returned to Bretforton on Sunday when openers Daryl Mitchell and Richard Layton both scored centuries against Swindon.

Gregory, who took 6-19, then proved almost unplayable with the ball as the visitors could only manage 127-9 in reply to a daunting 305-5.

Saturday selection: Evesham v Martley away. Gregory, Lewis, Collins, Granacki, P Jones, Horn, Q Jones, Prince, Irvine, Bailey.
