NFU West Midlands will break new ground on Thursday, June 11 by becoming the first region to host a meeting of one of the organisation's national committees outside London.

The NFU Food Standards Committee will meet at the NFU offices at the National Agricultural Centre at Stoneleigh Park between 11am and 1pm.

Committee chairman Michael Seals decided to take his meeting on the road to give grass root members greater access to the workings of the organisation on a national basis.

"The subject of food law is beginning to impinge on the agricultural industry to an even greater extent," Mr Seals said. "The sort of work the committee does is low-key but absolutely necessary. We will be discussing issues like the Meat Hygiene Service, European food law and controls on imports of contaminated meat, an issue that the NFU has extensively campaigned on since last year's foot and mouth outbreak."

He added: "I hope that as many local NFU members as possible will make every effort to attend and see first-hand the work that is being done by the organisation at a national level on their behalf."
