ON returning from a trip abroad I was delighted to see your headline "People Power" in the Shuttle/Times & News, regarding the traffic-calming referendum to be held in Bewdley.

Your headline succinctly captured the essence of the problem, when politicians yet again go off half-cocked and fail to listen to local people.

The extreme scheme being forced on Bewdley has been hatched out by consultants living hundreds of miles away and backed by county council officials who do not live in the area and do not drive every day on the roads concerned.

For those of us who do, most of the many humps and bumps proposed are totally unnecessary and there are so many worthy causes which could better use the vast sums involved.

Whatever views are held it is vital in the interests of democracy for Bewdley people to turn out and vote next Thursday.

Only in this way can we prevent politicians peddling their own agendas, totally out of touch with the people.
