JUDO: Tom Walker has become the youngest Wyre Forest judo player to be graded to blue belt, beating a record held by his sister Kate.

The Samurai Judo Club 10-year-old has won a British junior silver medal as well as a gold at the North-West Open in the past.

A panel of three examiners assessed stylish wins over players three years older than himself and decided to promote the youngster.

K Walker achieved her blue at the age of 11 just a year ago with a spectacular display.

But her brother shaved a year off the record and now only has brown belt to achieve in the junior ranks.

T Walker's club-mates dominated the grading, decimating opposition from the Midlands.

The club's girls won every contest and three yellow belts each beat three higher grades decisively.

Joanne Butcher and Emma Burgess were both promoted directly to green, cutting out orange, after throwing all their opponents, including five greens, for maximum points easily.

Younger Aimee Hodson also won every contest well but was held back to top orange by her age.

In the green belts, Gemma Mansell made her debut for Samurai after transferring from another local club and jumped to blue with a great display.

Mansell has been training with the club's international juniors and hopes for even better results in the future.

Samurai's other green belt, Stacey Mayo, won every contest but moved just to the middle level due to her age.

The boys' yellow belts were no less dynamic as Richard Baulk, Joel Darch and Karl Gaughan all swept passed the opposition to top-orange grade.

Archie Shrimpton stood out though, beating two players of his own grade and then a green belt just as quickly.

The examiners promoted him straight to green after witnessing an excellent maximum-point throw against a top-graded opponent from Kettering.

Benji Connor progressed to middle green after throwing everybody with devastating foot sweeps, while Robin Woodward defeated everybody apart from an epic draw with club-mate Greg Oertel.

Woodward moved to green and South African import Oertel did likewise in his transfer to the British grading system after remaining unbeaten.

Ben Newbury won his contests in style to fly up to top green belt.
