THE first decision at the inaugural meeting of Worcester City Council's new cabinet was to throw out a challenge to a new church in St Peter's.

Councillor Aubrey Tarbuck had wanted a detailed site survey to be carried out on land at Abbotsbury Court.

At the first meeting he told the cabinet that the plans for a new community centre, church and housing were not necessarily supported by the majority of residents. The old-style Executive Board last month agreed to the proposals.

Coun Stephen Inman opened the first meeting at the Guildhall at 7pm and welcomed everyone who attended.

"This is the first of what are officially called cabinet meetings, just like the old executive board but slightly different," he said.

The first public participant of the new style meeting was Nigel Bullock, on the St Peter's item.

He told the cabinet that should the estate be the location for the Red Hill Baptist Church it would benefit all members of the community.

"Time is moving on and it's now right to move these proposals forward," said Mr Bullock, speaking on behalf of the church.

"Red Hill Baptist Church is willing to build a church for the community with facilities available for local use.

"We wish to grow and expand the facilities we provide and the demand is there.

"None of our groups is exclusive to church members, they are available for all to enjoy.

"The original decision was not one that was made lightly or in haste."

Coun Martin Clarke said residents in St Peter's should look at Warndon Villages to see how a new church can benefit the community.

The cabinet agreed to throw out Coun Tarbuck's objections and continue with the plans.
