THE sound of south-east Asian music could soon be coming from a Worcestershire school, thanks to a spruce-up of Gamelan musical instruments.

The pieces, from Bali and Central Java, were recently taken out of the old chapel of Cliffey House School, Hanley Castle, near Upton-upon Severn.

For some years Worcestershire's LEA music service has stored the full Gamelan orchestra at the school.

During a recent refurbishment all the parts were put together in the school's Expressive Arts Studio.

"With the help of some of the pupils the gong, bronze kettles and metallophones, bamboo xylophones, drums and cymbals were cleaned and polished to their former glory, " said Helen Maskew, headteacher at Cliffey House School.

"The Gamelan is a group of percussion instruments which, when played together make a beautiful, melodious sound."

The school intends to hold some Balinese days when Gamelan experts will give demonstrations, alongside displays of other aspects of Balinese culture.
