NEWLY elected men's captain at Evesham, Eric Pike, enjoyed success in the regional finals of the St Andrews Foursomes event.

Partnered by professional Dan Cummins, the pair carded a magnificent 41 points at Mere Golf Club in Cheshire to book a place in next month's finals staged over 36 holes on the Old Course at St Andrews.

Fellow members Ian Clarke and Martin Charles could also be in line for a trip to the Home of Golf, after coming out on top in the Famous Grouse Shotgun Foursomes competition with a score of 61 at their home club.

The youngsters' success in the initial stages of the competition, which this year is truly international and takes in almost 900 clubs from every corner of Britain plus several from countries in Europe and the Far East, keeps the pair well in the race for a place in the International Final on Scotland's East Coast in October.

Then, a total of 46 players will spend two days in St Andrews and will compete over the same historic links of the Old Course where the Open Championship has been played on no fewer than 26 occasions.

The men competed in a foursomes competition played off half handicap in a strong wind that saw no one under par.

A spectacular eagle two at the tricky sixth hole, courtesy of a holed six-iron by John Bidwell, proved crucial in securing the win for Bidwell and his partner Richard Cox, who carded a net 73.
