THE distinctively rich voice of Henry Blofeld has been entertaining and enriching the lives of cricket lovers for decades.

His ability to paint a vivid picture of the backdrop to the game -- cream teas and passing buses -- has helped to make Test Match Special a broadcasting institution.

But he has plenty more to say beyond the confines of the boundary rope, as those who hear him speak in An Evening with Blowers at Malvern's Theatres this Saturday will find out.

"It is not only applicable to cricket lovers," he said. "I think people who don't enjoy cricket would get an awful lot of fun out of it.

"It is all about my life and all the strange and amusing things that have happened to me and all the funny stories."

His talk is based around his autobiography, A Thirst For Life, and may well take in such tales as the time he and five friends drove from London to, the then, Bombay in an old Rolls Royce. It will include a 20-minute question and answer session.

Beyond cricket, Blowers is known for his love of wines and good food. He writes a wine column and is kept busy writing books, writing about travel, theatrical appearances and regular one-off appearances on television and radio.

Despite his age of 62 and having to undergo major heart surgery two years ago, he has not slowed down at all and has spent the winter following the varying fortunes of England's cricketers.

"I suppose we are marginally better at the end of it, but I don't think we have achieved as much as we hoped to achieve.

"I have my doubts about a number of things and we should never have lost that last game in New Zealand."
