THE biggest party Kidderminster has seen for years has been promised by the group overseeing the town's golden jubilee celebrations.

The two days of free events, kicking off with the Mayor's parade on Sunday, June 2 and culminating with a spectacular fireworks display the following day, have been billed as offering "something for everyone".

Kidderminster Golden Jubilee Partnership - made up of people from Wyre Forest District Council, town centre partnership and other groups - has been formed to make the ideas come to reality.

The focus for the musical events, including live performances from district 70s group Ballroom Glitz, the Royal British Legion band, and karaoke, will be a stage outside the town hall. Vicar Street and High Street will provide the venue for a children's parade, street entertainers and other attractions.

"I think people will have an excellent time," said jubilee partnership spokeswoman Sue Harper. "There's something for all age groups and it's free.

"We're trying to give people of the district and the town a bit of a treat. It will be the biggest town centre celebration that I can remember.

"The town hall's going to be all decked out and the bunting will stay up until Christmas."

Ms Harper added that people will be able to choose from a wide range of events.

On Sunday afternoon, for instance, there is a showcase for local talent outside the town hall to attract aspiring musicians.

For those with different tastes the district council is putting on the West Mercia Constabulary Band in Brinton Park, billed as performing "songs from the shows as well as modern and traditional favourites".

And Bewdley gets in on the act too on Sunday afternoon with the "Jazz Ramblers" giving a "lively repertoire in the beautiful setting of the Queen Elizabeth II Gardens".

On Saturday, June 1 a Hits from the Blitz concert will get folk in the party mood when it is staged at Kidderminster Town Hall with music from the 40s and 50s.
