STAR scorer Colin Smith finally reached the 1,000-point landmark as Cleobury Mortimer fell 23-14 at third-placed Tamworth in Midlands Four West (North).

Recovering from an early missed penalty, it was the first Cleobury score that brought the big cheer as Smith managed his second try in successive matches.

Smith converted to pass the mark with ease as relegation-threatened Cleobury more than held their own in the first period.

Tamworth crossed for an unconverted try and managed two penalties.

Despite having just one replacement, an early ankle problem for Colin Todd required Hylton Smith to play wing-forward after 10 minutes which was to prove crucial later on.

At 11-7 to the home team, it was still a competitive game and, shortly after the restart, Tony Heap scored a second try to put the visitors ahead.

Smith converted but then Cleobury were hit by another injury, leaving them with 14 tiring players.

Tamworth added two tries and one conversion in the final 10 minutes to clinch the victory.
