COUNTY councillors have put plans for a Squires Link road at Evesham on their priority list.

Councillor Clive Holt was one of eight members who submitted a notice of motion calling for action at a Worcestershire County Council cabinet meeting last Thursday.

He asked that the Government be pressed for funding for the link when the Local Transport Plan Annual Progress Report was submitted in July.

Coun Holt said: "I am pleased that the junction off the Worcester Road to Greenhill has been recognised as a priority.

"When the Wyre Piddle bypass is complete and the A4538 Worcester Road is reclassified as an 'A' road, all through traffic travelling south will be diverted onto the Squires, which is a country lane.

"The junction is notorious for accidents as it is, therefore it is essential that a link road is built from Worcester Road to the bypass at Twyford as soon as possible."

MP Peter Luff is also putting his weight behind the scheme. He said: "I am actively campaigning for this new road and want to see it built very urgently indeed."

Outline design, feasibility work and costs have already been commissioned for inclusion in the transport progress report to the Government.

An interim accident investigation studies report is also being undertaken with the intention of making the junction safer in the meantime.
