MR Sherratt's suggestion that "there's nothing to worry about" (Shuttle/Times & News, April 4) with the proposed incinerator, is gratuitous nonsense and deliberately misleading.
The waste strategy presented on behalf of Mercia Waste Management at the public inquiry was shown to be flawed and lacking in credibility.
1 Evidence produced showed that the British Sugar site does not conform with the proximity principle.
2 It was also demonstrated that neither the county council or Mercia Waste Management were able to prove that a BPEO (Best Practicable Environmental Option) has ever been carried out, which is an essential requirement to establish an authenticated waste strategy.
3 Their suggestions that the incinerator will have limited adverse visual impact on the landscape were shown to be untrue and without foundation.
4 An examination of the scheme as proposed indicates that it will be incapable of meeting current statutory targets for incineration.
5 The evidence produced by Dr Vyvyan Howard of the University of Liverpool showed that the risks to human health would be of serious magnitude.
6 Over the 25-year contract period, over 5,000 tonnes of toxic emissions would be produced by the incinerator, and to suggest that we have nothing to worry about is a deliberate insult.
Mr Sherratt might be more usefully employed in explaining why his company has entered into a secret arrangement with the county council to allow the incinerator to be increased by 50 per cent in size at some time in the future.
