Forest, battling for runners-up spot in the league, had the best of the first half and Kieron O'Brien was denied by a brilliant save from keeper Dave Spencer.
Richard Hughes and Glen Beaman also nearly scored but half-time was reached with neither side on target.
Hinton took the lead through Chris Aspey after a goal-mouth scramble.
Forest had a chance to draw level but substitute Mark Allen saw his brilliant effort denied by the post.
And, from the rebound, Andy Oakes smashed the ball against the bar.
Luke and Ross Semple both had chances to increase second-placed Hinton's lead but missed.
