A WORCESTER teenager chased a security guard around a shop with a golf club after hearing that his sister had been threatened.

The 13-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, stormed into the Spar store in Cranham Drive, Warndon, and hurled abuse at the guard, Worcester Magistrates Court heard yesterday.

Mike Cowley, prosecuting, said the youngster, who lives in the Warndon area of the city, began by shouting at the member of staff. He said he was asked to leave, which he did, but he then returned and started shouting again.

"He started to chase the security guard around the aisles, which was caught on CCTV cameras," he said.

"He chased him three times before a shop assistant got hold of him and took the club."

Mr Cowley said the shop had been busy at the time of the incident, which happened on Wednesday, April 3.

He said people in the store had been scared that he was going to use the club against the store guard.

The youngster admitted affray.

Richard Wilkes, defending, said the teenager was very protective towards his sister.

He said the trouble started after the boy heard that she was having trouble with the security guard at the Spar.

"She had complained that the security guard was getting his friends to come and threaten her," he said.

He said the boy walked to the shop after receiving a call from his sister, saying the guard's friends had threatened to kill her.

"He was concerned about the welfare of his sister," he said.

But he pointed out that he did not actually swing the club at any point, and video footage showed that he spent most of the time walking with the club in both hands.

He also said the youngster had learning difficulties and behavioural problems.

"He wanted to look after his sister for the right reasons, but went about it in the wrong way," said Mr Wilkes.

Magistrates sentenced the teenager to a six-month referral order, and ordered his mother to pay £25 towards costs.
