ALVECHURCH villagers are set to once again turn out in force to celebrate St George's Day on Tuesday.

The festivities begin at 7am when the English flag flies from the top of St Laurence's Church tower and the bells ring out.

The village's three combined WIs will serve traditional English afternoon teas at Alvechurch Village Hall, Bear Hill, from 2.30pm as Palm Court musicians provide a musical backdrop.

A St George's Day service takes place in the parish church at 7pm, with patriotic hymns including Jerusalem and I Vow To Thee My Country and guest speaker Fred Trethewey, a well-known Black Country character with a wealth of experience and anecdotes.

A St George's Day Social then takes place, again at the village hall, with English red and white wine, fish and chips and real ale, as well as a rousing sing-a-long.

The Alvechurch Morris Men will also be performing some of their traditional routines and the evening ends with a Last Night of the Proms, featuring the voluptuous Dame Clara Butt as Britannia.
