ALCESTER Friends of Cancer Research UK is celebrating two decades of success after raising nearly £125,000 towards fighting the disease.

The group was set up in 1981 after member Sue Blackburn lost her husband to cancer.

Despite having a young family, Mrs Blackburn dedicated a lot of time and hard work towards raising money for cancer research.

The group was formed and despite snowy conditions for the first meeting, residents turned up to a coffee morning at the home of the then chairman Norman Barker.

The event was a success and the group went on to raise £500 in just three months.

Many events followed, including Alcester Garden Walkabouts, barn dances, book sales and fun runs.

Over the years there have been about 30 residents on the committee who have been helped by many others. Sadly two committee members have died from cancer.

Members will today receive thanks from Cancer Research UK, Alcester's Mayor Wendy Weatherhead and town councillors.
