EFFORTS to protect Bromsgrove's precious green belt land have been supported by an independent planning chief.

The planning inspector who led a public inquiry into Bromsgrove District Council's Local Plan proposals considered more than 900 objections from residents, landowners and developers before coming to a decision.

He has now backed the council's opinion that land reserved for long-term development should be restricted despite efforts by the house building industry to have more sites identified.

The Local Plan will govern future development in Bromsgrove and safeguard important sites.

It's expected to be adopted by the end of 2002.

The authority's cabinet member responsible for planning policy, Cllr Jean Luck (Con, Alvechurch), said. "We feel this is a well judged report by the inspector and it will help the council protect its green belt for many years to come."

The inspector agreed land reserves should be found in Hagley, Wythall, Frankley, Barnt Green, Alvechurch and Bromsgrove.

But, it's unlikely any of these will need to be released for building before 2011.

He also asked the council to make minor adjustments to some policies in the blueprints, mainly changes in language for clarification.

Council leader Nick Psirides (Con, Norton) said. "It's good news for Bromsgrove as the inspector's report differs very little from our own Local Plan submission.

"Once adopted this plan will further strengthen our hand to resist unreasonable applications from developers."
