A TWENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD fashion design student from Bromsgrove will recreate the golden fifties era and bring a nostalgic feel to a London catwalk next month.
Former South Bromsgrove High School pupil Kelly Halfpenny, of Old Station Road, will join fellow students at the University of Central England in Birmingham to showcase designs at Battersea Arena on Monday June 10.
Inspired by her late grandmother, Clarice Nokes, Kelly has enthusiastically set about recreating the golden fifties era.
Her grandmother died last year from a brain tumour but her wish was to see Kelly's designs on a catwalk and the plucky Bromsgrove student is only too keen to fulfil her dream.
The dazzling collection of designs were triggered off by an old wartime photograph of children in pixie hats and baggy trousers.
Kelly retraced the fashions of her grandmother's childhood and teen years and the idea gradually expanded.
Soon the budding young designer had brought back puff ball skirts, head scarves and a selection of knit wear from the fifties.
The event, sponsored by Topshop will see fashion students from across the country anxiously waiting in the hope that their designs will be spotted by a top designer.
Kelly said: "I'm really looking forward to the event, but am nervous at the same time.
"I just hope everything goes well on the day.
"My family and friends have been a great help and the whole thing has been a fantastic learning experience."
