DORIS STYLES

MEMORIAL TROPY

Monday Division One outfit Runaways overcame their Wednesday Division One opponents Morganite to clinch victory in the final of the Doris Styles Memorial Trophy held at The Blackpole.

The better of the early exchanges went Morganite's way, in reply to Runaways opening leg of 75, Morganite posted legs of 83 and 84.

With Runaways only managing to record 77 on their second leg they found themselves 15 adrift after two.

Back they came with a vengeance, in a brilliant third leg they totalled 96 without a spare, no less than seven players scoring a full frame, six of them consecutive.

Morganite maintained their consistency holding on to a five pin lead after three legs with an 86.

They slipped slightly on their fourth with an 81 and Runaways stepped in with final two legs of 88 and 90, the last leg containing a match winning spare from skipper and veteran bowler Reg Turner.

This left Morganite a daunting but possible 93 to win.

They started strongly, the top half managing 45 to set up a grandstand finish.

The bottom half needing to average 8 apiece did just that right until the last two, but with anchorman Ray Gandy needing 8 to tie , 9 to win could only get 6 from a difficult split and they fell just two pins short.

A final played in great spirit and in true Friendly League fashion quoted League Chairman Alan Collins who presented the trophy to winning captain Reg Turner.

Scores: Runaways 426, (Reg Turner 42; Morganite 424, (Don Tyler 41).
