Council leisure chiefs are searching for a new company or organisation to take on the Lido site in Droitwich as the current developer's plans look set to collapse.

Wychavon District Council confirmed this week that developer Calypso, which was planning to redevelop the Worcester Road attraction by building a multi-million complex, is now looking for an alternative site.

The Anglo-German firm, which was the only business company to put forward plans for the Lido, is looking to take on a much bigger scheme which would be better suited to a larger town, meaning there is a strong possibility that they will drop their scheme for the Droitwich Lido.

Calypso's plans for the Droitwich complex included building five indoor and outdoor pools, saunas and spas.

The council will now re-advertise in the UK and abroad for other companies or organisations to come forward to redevelop the 1930s salt pool.

Local action group Save Our Lido Today (SALT), which was set up to fight the redevelopment plans for the Lido, says the council now needs to take action quickly to rescue the situation.

SALT's treasurer, David Parkinson, said: "The only way this news can be good news is if the council takes action quickly.

"The Lido should have been kept open while negotiations were on-going, I doubt it will be opened this year now, which is such a shame," he added.

Wychavon's community partnership chairman, Cllr Martin Jennings, said: "Although Calypso has not actually withdrawn, Wychavon has begun to research alternative options in the interest of Wychavon residents at large.

"European legislation will require a new advertisement and any interested body will be entitled to respond with their proposals."

Further discussions about what to do next will take place next Tuesday at the district council's full council meeting.
