A YOUNG boy has died after colliding with a car outside a Worcester school.

The four-year-old was with his mother on their way to collect his sister from Hindlip CE First School, Fernhill Heath, when the tragedy happened.

The boy suffered head injuries and died later at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Police said the driver of the blue Volvo S40 stopped after the accident outside the Droitwich Road school, at 2.48pm.

Hindlip CE headteacher Julie King confirmed that young pupils - aged from four to nine - were kept back for five minutes until paramedics had taken the boy to hospital.

A resident of Sling Lane, near the school, saw the ambulance crew trying to save the boy's life.

"I was going down the road but I couldn't turn on to the Droitwich road because two ambulances were there," said Alan Wood, who has lived in Sling Lane for 30 years and was on his way to work.

"The boy was lying on the floor with paramedics, but I couldn't see anything else.

"I heard the noise but didn't see it happen."

Mr Wood, whose sons are former pupils of the school, said there had been a couple of accidents on the road a few years ago.

"They took place about 50 yards away, a few years ago," he said. "One lad was injured in a car.

"People come through the village too quick, and I've even seen them overtaking on the wrong side of the bollards on the road."

Another neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said two children were knocked down on a nearby crossing two or three years ago.

A Worcester police spokeswoman said the boy's parents had asked for his name not to be released yet.

"It's a very distressing time for them," she said.

Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to contact PC Julie Slater, at Worcester Police Station, on 01905 723888, quoting c/577835.
