COUNCILLORS in Kidderminster are mourning the loss of one of the town's former mayors.
Coun Steve Roberts, portfolio holder for environment and development on the Wyre Forest District Council, died suddenly last Friday. He was 50.
The death of the Liberal Democrat Group leader has come as a devastating blow to the whole council.
Council leader Mike Oborski said Coun Roberts, a councillor for Sutton Park Ward, cared a great deal about people and the community, and about his beloved home town of Kidderminster.
Articulate
"He was able, articulate and effective," he said. "He was a first-rate mayor and an exemplary, effective and hard-working portfolio holder under the new Cabinet system."
Coun Oborski said he was a man of undoubted principle and of total integrity, who loved theatre, cinema, television, music, food, friends and good company.
Flags on council buildings will be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect.
Coun Roberts was due to stand for re-election on Thursday, May 2 in the Sutton Park Ward. That will now have to be abandoned and re-run at a later date.
