A CONCERNED grandmother whose 18-month-old grand-daughter nearly drowned in the Droitwich canal after slipping under railings says she fears a child will die if action is not taken.

She has also appealed for the three Good Samaritans who helped rescue the tot and her mother to come forward.

Alexandra Reilly fell into the canal's icy waters at Vines Park after her mother, Tracey, slipped as they fed the ducks from a bridge.

The family was visiting grandmother Christina Woodall, who lives in Wensleydale, Droitwich, after moving to Devon from Wychbold, last year.

"I had popped off to get more bread because Alexandra was enjoying feeding the ducks so much," she said.

"Alexandra was at a safe distance with Tracey and her four-year-old brother Richard, but the surface was slimy and they slipped.

"Tracey lost her grip of Alexandra, who fell between the rails and straight into the canal.

"Surely measures could be taken? A child could well die if nothing is done."

The grandmother added that, despite injuring her leg, Tracey dived in after Alexandra straight away. The depth of the canal made it difficult for her to climb out.

"Fortunately, two women and a postman came along and helped," added Mrs Woodall.

"I dread to think what could have happened without them. Although I don't know who they are, I wish to express my most sincere thanks for their kindness."

The youngster was taken to Worcester's Ronkswood Hospital for check-ups but released.

Councillor Margaret Rowley, chairman of the Droitwich Canal Trust, said the incident was being looked into but expressed concern about more railings.

"It could encourage children to climb them and fall in from a greater height," she said.
