RANGERS travelled to Feckenham to play Midland Combination Division Two side Droitwich Spa in the quarter final of the WFA Junior Cup on Saturday and after a pretty awful opening 30 minutes clawed their way back into the game to eventually go through to their second semi-final.

DROITWICH SPA 1, MALVERN RANGERS 2

Droitwich opened strongly and had Rangers on the back foot and after only five minutes they opened the scoring when Rangers failed to clear the ball successfully, it was played back into the area for Andy Keenahan to give keeper Carl Preece no chance from close range.

Rangers were struggling to get their game together and most of the pressure was from the home side. It was not until 20 minutes into the half that Craig Penney and Marc Lines combined allowing Simon Rea Rangers' first real chance but he shot wide of the far post. Three minutes later Chris Davis shot wide before after 35 minutes Rangers forced an equaliser. Stuart Harvey and Simon Rea combined and when the cross came into the box Marc Lines headed home into the corner.

Just four minutes later and Rangers had the opportunity to go in front when the home keeper made a hash of his clearance but Stuart Harvey failed to register.

After 25 minutes of the second half Rangers took the lead with a stunning goal. Stuart Harvey won a header in the Droitwich half and when the ball was played to Chris Davis he cracked home a tremendous shot into the roof of the net, a goal worthy of winning any game.

Five minutes later Stuart Harvey shot narrowly wide before the home side threw caution to the wind and tried to attack in numbers although Rangers defended admirably.

On 40 minutes a free kick on the right saw a Droitwich shot go narrowly wide of the far post. In the last few minutes of play Rangers could have made their victory more comfortable but three good chances were all missed.

This was a very hard fought victory but one eventually deserved to take Rangers through to their second semi-final of the season.

Man of the Match: jointly awarded to Steve Hodges and Sean Lynch.
