A NEW bus shelter in Church Street was defended by the Priory Ward Electors' Association 50 years ago.
The association "felt that. . . the new shelter was an improvement on old conditions and a distinct improvement to the appearance of the town.
The shelter, outside what was then Baylis's Chemists, had been criticised a few weeks previously by Chase electors, who accused it of "masquerading as a shelter" and stigmatised it as "totally inadequate and a waste of public money".
