Patrick Skelton's suggestion (Postbag, November 16) of moving Malvern's gas lamps to a central location where they may enhance the atmosphere of Malvern is eminently sensible.
They are an attractive feature, but hopelessly inadequate for their primary purpose of street lighting. The Wells road suffers in particular from this inadequacy, especially when most traffic ignores the speed limit in daylight, and doubly so after dark.
I also find the suggestion that the parish should bear the costs of maintenance ludicrous - perhaps that privilege should go to English Heritage or the Department of Culture, Media and Sport?
