ROYAL BRITISH LEGION WOMENS SECTION: October and November is always an important time in the calendar of The Royal British Legion, Womens Section, Badsey, Aldington and Wickhamford branch. On October 24 members gathered for the AGM when the election of officials took place.

Chairman Bet Westmacott; vice chairman Connie Newbury who has held this position for a number of years decided to stand down, due to ill health. Bet Hurman was nominated and elected. Secretary Val Taylor; treasurer - once again this position has been well administered in the capable hands of Nance Grinnell, but once again due to health reasons, decided she was no longer able to fulfil this post. There were no nominations. During the previous year the chairman and secretary had 'caretaken' the treasurer and as they did a good job, said the branch, they were elected to continue for a further year. The remainder of the officials were returned unopposed, with the exception of the actual committee where two new members were elected. They are Wendy Beasley and Pat Gorin. On these occasions a speaker from County Committee is often asked to come along to talk to the ladies. As this year saw two of our own members on County they did a 'duo act' and kept the ladies entertained. November once again and 12 members travelled to The Royal Albert Hall to see The Festival of Remembrance. Naturally this year security was very strict. With circle seats and a large close up screen we had a good view of all that went on. Being the 80th anniversary of the RBL the older ladies enjoyed the sing-a-long with Max Bygraves at the beginning of the festival. Too soon we are homeward bound, just in time to see the evening performance on TV - as most of the footage is taken while we are there in the afternoon - who knows one might even catch a glimpse of oneself or friend in the audience. Sunday being November 11 and the parade of men, women legion members, plus the junior youth groups of Badsey attended a service at Badsey Church. The parade is led by the mens section, but as they have no-one to carry their Standard the ladies deputy, Angie Humpston steps in on these occasions.

The ladies Standard being carried by Jackie Emms. Laying the wreath on behalf of the ladies section was the honour of Ann Wilson. November 17 (later than usual) was the AGM of Worcestershire County at County Hall, Worcester. Members attending were Jackie Emms carrying the Standard, Angie Humpston as delegate, and Bet Westmacott as county committee member. Due to a previous engagement our 'other committee member' was unable to attend. After three years in office Mrs May Wheeler relinquished the chair and Mrs Audrey Watson from the Droitwich branch was elected to take her place. Cups and certificates were awarded and were presented by Lady Sands. Badsey, Aldington and Wickhamford branch were awarded three cups and two certificates. Saturday in the lounge of the Legion Club, Badsey will be holding a Christmas Fair, admission 50p to include coffee and mince pie. That is December 1. When anyone who would like to come along will be welcomed. An evening out once a month! Why not join us the fourth Wednesday in the month (unless something special is on). Entertaining evening - not clique - we try to cater for all ages as our members range from 19-86 years. Anyone can join you don't have to have any association with the forces. We meet in the lounge of the RBL Club, Badsey at 7.30pm. Even if you don't live in Badsey, you are welcome. Come on give us a try.
