AN ELDERLY dog fond of rolling in "unmentionables" could be the deserving beneficiary of a canine makeover if its owner digs deep in her pockets.

The offer of a doggie make-over is part of a promises auction in aid of Neen Savage Church, near Cleobury Mortimer. Over 100 prizes have been donated by businesses to help fund the ancient church's restoration.

"It's a beautiful old building but it's rather tired," said Gillian Hinton, a member of the fund-raising committee. "It needs a lot of restoration."

Mrs Hinton, 38, of Baveney Wood, aims to bid for the makeover, courtesy of Julie Guest's His 'n' Hers Dog Grooming in Cleobury Mortimer, for her 11-year-old lurcher Jip.

"She's described as a 'scruffy muck magnet' by everyone who knows her," she said, "Jip's had a hard life and deserves a makeover. Maybe Christmas in our house will be a bit more pleasant this year!"

Other lots include an executive box at West Bromwich Albion Football Club, tickets for Worcestershire County Cricket Club, trips on the Severn Valley Railway and hot air balloon and glider flights.

The auction begins at 7.30pm this evening at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club. Details are available from Emma Haywood on 01299 270137 or from Gillian Hinton on 01299 841293.
