ONE of the world's most deadly spiders found "on its last legs" in a jar in the Wyre Forest has prompted an urgent appeal for information.

The black funnel web spider was found, severely dehydrated, by a woman out walking in the forest on Saturday.

The spider was handed in to Wilsons Pet Centre, New Road, Kidderminster. Staff alerted police and called in the RSCPA.

RSPCA animal collection officer Coral Wilkinson took the spider to West Midland Safari Park, Bewdley, where it was identified as a native species of Australia.

The jar the spider was found in had a Perth International Airport sticker on it and it is thought it could have been brought back by someone returning from a holiday down under who then dumped it.

Matt Swatman, of the safari park, said: "The spider is a member of the most venomous family in the world. It has been severely dehydrated and is unlikely to survive."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the RSPCA on its 24-hour national number, 08705 555999. All calls are treated in confidence.
