THINGS went from bed to worse for a man whose brand new car was left with £1,000 damage - after being hit by a flying divan.

The single bed, which was covered in a distinctive red checked fabric, quite literally fell off the back of a lorry on Bewdley bypass near the West Midland Safari Park on Friday.

Pelsall man Keith Tilley and his wife were lucky not to be seriously hurt in the incident at about 7.40pm, said Kidderminster Police spokeswoman Caroline Schubert.

He had only had the Mitsubishi FTO for 24 hours and was driving towards Kidderminster when the bed fell from a flat-bed lorry travelling in the opposite direction and bounced into his path.

The bed had disappeared when the police went to the scene the following morning.

Mrs Schubert added: "The bed could not have been properly secured on the lorry. We want to hear from anyone who saw the incident, or who saw the bed being removed from the carriageway.

"We would also like to know if there is anyone who was expecting the supply of a bed which fits this description and had their order unexpectedly cancelled at the last minute."
