A LATE try proved enough to give the King's School a narrow 8-5 win over the Royal Grammar School in the annual clash of Worcester's oldest schools in front of a big crowd at Sixways last night.

Ross Laidlaw's penalty put King's in front, but a catch and drive from a line-out enabled Adrian Lightowler to go over for a try to give RGS a 5-3 lead at the interval.

The score remained that way until just four minutes from time when Laidlaw squeezed over in the corner for a try to put King's back in front.

RGS had a last-gasp try ruled out for a knock-on, but their rugby master Gareth Hughes said the performance had made him "a very proud man".

He added: "We were the clear underdogs but we played out of our skins and the best team lost. We spent most of the game in their half and played the better rugby."

King's rugby master, Peter Gwilliam said: "It was exceptionally close, credit to RGS but we showed character as we have done all season with a number of last minute tries."
