MIGHT I, as a former county resident, return to your columns having attended a major rural Conference, the Plunkett Foundation Conference., Shrewsbury and which took place on November 6 and 7.
Guest speaker was the Rt Hon Alun Michael MP, Minister of State for DEFRA and responsible for the Rural White Paper. There was wide ranging list of those attending, from DEFRA to organisations concerned with social enterprises, Post Offices, the plight of a crisis hit and diminishing farming structure together with banking to accommodate the poorer sections of our communities.
The Minister spoke of his wish to see a Living and Working Countryside and since the convenor has been through all of that and made the scape goat of the Tories unrepresentativeness together with clueless MEP's, at the age of 60 and without the basic or material effects with which to further a life at such an age, left to fiscal obscenity via the 'competence' of the Member State. Any views from your readers would be welcome.
JOHN E WILLETT, Convenor (Voluntary), Future of Rural Society, Eastgate Road, Holmes Chapel, Cheshire.
