INJUSTICE must be a subject that's close to the hearts of all MPs. Their job is to right wrongs and to make life better for all of us.

The injustice that confronts all of Worcestershire today is the amount of money the Government is prepared to allow the county council to spend on education.

It's a subject that's created heated debate in staff rooms throughout the county - and in the Palace of Westminster, too.

Now, at long last, we're on the verge of seeing what the Government has to offer

Sources indicate that our schools will receive an above- average increase of around five per cent.

That's good news, but what's equally important is that Labour tackles the inequality between the amount of money allocated to Worcestershire and that set aside for other shire counties.

As we've pointed out before, counties such as Berkshire and Sussex have, in the past, received substantially more cash than Worcestershire - though it doesn't cost any less to run a school here.

It's important that MPs Peter Luff and Mike Foster have been campaigning for a better deal for our children.

And we hope, too, that Sir Michael Spicer, who as chairman of the Conservative's backbench 1922 Committee has a strong voice in Parliament, has been able to bring his influence to bear.

Whatever the political differences of the county's MPs, the quality of education for our children must, at the moment, be their over-riding concern.

Such an injustice - which has gone on far too long - has to be put right. As Mr Luff says, what matters is that Worcestershire's funding moves significantly closer to the average for the shire counties.
