WITNESSES to a hit and run accident in Kidderminster have been urged to come forward by the wife of a victim who had to have emergency brain surgery.

Gareth Ward, 33, was cycling to work at Brockway Carpets, where he is a backing plant supervisor, when he was hit by a red Renault Five.

The accident happened in Wilden Lane near the viaduct at about 8am on Tuesday, November 20. Tracy Ward near the spot where her husband Gareth was left for dead by a hit and run driver.

His injuries were not thought to be life-threatening - until he started bleeding from the ear at Worcester's Ronkswood Hospital.

He was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he underwent a four-and-a-half hour operation.

Surgeons worked to remove a blood clot at the base of his skull.

His wife Tracy, 32, who works as a credit controller at Adam Carpets, said: "He has been transferred to Kidderminster Hospital for rehabilitation and is making quite a good recovery.

"What worries me is that this happened where there are lots of people.

"What if it had happened down a quiet side road? He would have died."

A police spokeswoman said the accident had been seen by staff at the Viaduct Service Station.

After the collision the driver of the Renault stopped the car and looked back at Mr Ward before driving off in the direction of the viaduct.

Mr Ward is expected to make a full recovery.

However, his wife is keen to see the driver who left him for dead brought to book.

"The person who did this didn't stop, they just drove on. I want to see a bit of justice for Gareth," she said.

Any witnesses or anyone with information about the driver of the Renault Five is asked to call Kidderminster Police on 01562 820888.
