A CARING Worcester schoolboy has been praised for his community spirit after his letter helped persuade the council to improve road safety.

Oliver Mills was concerned about road safety on St Peter's Drive and fed-up with cars sounding their horns at him and nearly knocking him from his bike.

The 14-year-old decided to pen a complaint to Worcestershire County Council in desperation to try to get something done.

Now, the council has said it will step up traffic calming measures by adding 30mph speed signs down both sides of the road.

"We've had occasions where he's nearly been knocked from his bike," said Oliver's father, Craig Mills.

"The road is very difficult to cross because the cars aren't doing the 30mph speed limit. The traffic in St Peter's can get very fast."

Mr Mills said Oliver, a pupil at The King's School, wrote to the county council to complain about fast traffic.

"They wrote back to him and said they'd paint a 30mph sign at one end of the road," said Mr Mills, from Raven Drive, St Peter's.

"It wasn't the end we lived at, so he wrote back and they said they'd do the other end.

"I was very surprised and he was really pleased."

St Peter's Parish Council mentioned Oliver's letter at a meeting this week.

"Apparently measures will be put at both ends of St Peter's Drive," said chairman Roger Knight.

"We sat here at a parish council meeting before and were told there was no money.

"One letter and suddenly money is found for the other end of St Peter's Drive."

After the meeting Mr Knight praised Oliver's actions and said he had set a wonderful example to the community.

"The lad took initiative and if more people took initiatives such as this, more would be done," he said.

"Here we are struggling to get people to fill two parish council posts. Oliver is showing up adults.

"If a 14-year-old boy can do it, why can't others?"

Tom Comeford, senior engineer in traffic management at the Transportation Partnership said the 30mph speed limit would be marked on both ends of the road in the near future.

"Because Oliver Mills wrote in and said there was a problem by the Timberdine pub we said we'd do it, but we would've done it anyway," he said.

"It will be a round white circle with 30 in it and it doesn't cost much."
