MPs are stepping up the pressure on Greek authorities to release a former Worcester man and his colleagues being held on espionage charges.

West Midlands MEP Liz Lynne raised the plight of Wayne Groves and 13 others during a full session of the European Parliament in Brussels yesterday.

The group has been held in Greek custody for three weeks after being arrested for allegedly taking photographs and making notes about military planes.

"Everyone expected Mr Groves and his colleagues would be released on Tuesday. The fact the Kalamata magistrate refused to throw out these ludicrous charges or even to grant bail means that the situation is now much more serious," said Ms Lynne.

Prime Minister Tony Blair was quizzed on the issue in his weekly question and answer slot in the House of Commons.

"I very much hope this issue can be resolved," said Mr Blair.

Mr Groves' father, Don, yesterday revealed his shock at the news his 38-year-old son had not been released.

The 64-year-old, speaking from his Kilbury Drive home, in Whittington, said the group was now due to appear before a judicial counsel, when three judges had been convened.
