ST Stephen's Church spire should be completely restored and on view for all to see in January.

The restoration process to replace crumbling stone on the 150-year-old spire hit some unexpected delays after stonemasons discovered some of the stone was particularly badly damaged.

Scaffolding was due to come down in October but will now be left up until the stone surround to a window in the tower under the spire is refurbished.

That work is being done in Birmingham and will take about a month before final pointing and re-touching work is carried out.

Canon David Salt said once the scaffolding was down, a ceremony of thanksgiving for all those who helped raise the cash would be held.

In all, the project will cost about £320,000.
