MEMBER Claire Ellis gave a talk on exotic plants and gardens at the latest meeting.

Exotic plants were very popular during Victorian times, some notable Victorians being keen plant collectors.

Although the popularity of these plants lessened with the arrival of the Arts and Crafts movement and Gertrude Jekyll's herbaceous border, they are again experiencing popularity.

There were slides of many of the large leafed plants that can be used to create an exiting, exotic feeling to the garden.

Among others, Claire recommended architectural phormium, cordylines and melianthus - the "honey bush" with bold, bright dashes of colour being added by dahlias, cannas and crocosmia.

Claire also recommended decking as being a suitable hard surface to be associated with exotic planting.
