A mugging victim lost his wallet after being confronted in Redditch by two robbers, a court heard.

Jonathan Trenter suffered verbal abuse from Jason Flannery before being battered to the ground.

Flannery's accomplice then stole the wallet containing £25 from the victim's back pocket.

Police arrested Flannery next day and he showed officers where they had dumped the empty wallet in a recycling bin, said Jonathan Challinor, prosecuting at Worcester Crown Court.

Flannery, aged 21, of Doverdale Close, pleaded guilty to robbery, theft of another wallet and stealing an ice-cream.

Jailing him for nine months, Recorder Christopher Murray said: "This was a particularly nasty attack. You set upon someone you didn't know and terrified him."

Flannery, who had a record for burglary and theft, told a probation officer he recalled the look of panic in Mr Trenter's eyes.

Mr Trenter was walking in Woodrow centre on September 2 when he realised two men were following him.

Flannery taunted him with being fat and then punched him on the side of the face to ensure they could take his wallet.

Five months earlier, Flannery asked 16-year-old Jason Featherstone for a cigarette after the lad was surrounded by a group outside a newsagents.

When another youth also asked for a cigarette, Flannery took advantage of the distraction to steal the teenager's wallet with £25 inside and ran off. He also stole an ice-cream from a service station.

The defendant told police he was tipsy before the robbery after downing five cans of beer and three vodkas.

His companion - who got away - suggested the crime but he agreed to take part.

Brett Stevenson, defending, said he had a troubled background but realised how serious his offending had been and expressed remorse.

A girlfriend had given him a new perspective on life and he was motivated towards change.
