RECYLING officers from Bromsgrove are banking on local residents to step up their enthusiasm this month and recycle more bottles and jars.
Last year 607 tonnes of glass was taken to the recycling banks in the area by eco-minded townspeople but this only amounted to just one third of all of the glass bottles and jars bought by residents during their weekly shopping.
This leaves 1,200 tonnes of glass that is being unnecessarily dumped by Bromsgrove residents in the landfill site in Evesham.
Bromsgrove District Council's assistant environmental strategy officer, Richard Johnson said:
"Many families already recycle all their glass bottles and jars, now we are asking that more families do their bit for the environment.
"It's amazing but each family must use on average 500 glass bottles and jars each year, which should be recycled at the glass recycling banks instead of just being dumped in the rubbish bin."
