ELDERLY relatives in Worcester could benefit from an Age Concern initiative to give them peace of mind.

Instead of giving socks and soap for Christmas the charity is asking residents to consider an Aid-Call personal alarm system.

The small alarm can either be clipped on as a brooch or worn as a pendant, and is connected to a response centre.

The two-way speech link allows the person who made the call to talk to a trained operator 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

"This scheme can give relatives peace of mind as well as giving those who use the alarm the security that there is always someone on hand," said Derek Gray, general manager for Age Concern Aid-Call.

With an average of 35 per cent of men and 72 per cent of women living alone, thousands of people across the UK are already using the call service, which costs from around £1 per week.
