A WORCESTER pensioner died on holiday after slipping in the bath and banging his head.

Edgar Humphries was on a trip to Fuerteventura with his wife of 50 years, Della, when the accident happened.

Mr Humphries died three days later, on Saturday, November 17, an inquest at Kidderminster Town Hall was told yesterday.

Worcestershire Coroner Victor Round told the inquest how Mr Humphries had fallen.

"He banged his head and grazed his elbow, but it didn't cause anyone or himself very much concern," said the coroner.

"In the following days he began to forget things and suddenly during the night of the November 15 and 16 he lost consciousness."

The grandfather-of-10, who lived at Kirkstone Drive, Warndon, was immediately admitted to a clinic and then taken to hospital, but he died the next day.

The couple's son Stephen had rushed to the holiday island when he had heard about the tragedy, and Mr Humphries was formally identified from a passport photograph.

In a post mortem on Mr Humphries, pathologist Dr Geoffrey Smith concluded the 67-year-old debt collector had died from a brain haemorrhage which was consistent with a fall.

Mr Round, who recorded a verdict of accidental death, assured Stephen Humphries little could have been done to save his father.

"It may be it had gone quite a way before anyone realised what had happened," he said.

"It was really very hard luck the way things turned out."

Mr and Mrs Humphries had celebrated their golden wedding anniversary only nine weeks before the accident.

They met at a swimming baths at the age of just 13, and married four years later.
