CITY leaders look likely to recommend the stock transfer of council housing at a meeting next Monday.

Worcester City Council's housing board and housing policy and review committee are meeting on Monday to discuss the issue.

If the decision is ratified by full council on Tuesday, December 11, an application will be made to the Government for a place on the stock transfer programme.

If this is successful tenants can be balloted, and they will have the final say on the matter.

"It's our view stock transfer is the only way forward if the future management and maintenance needs of the council's housing stock are to be fully met, and we hope members will agree on a way forward," said Sue Jackson, head of housing services.

"It's important to remember even if the board and council approve the recommendation, it is our tenants who will have the final say."

If stock transfer is approved, all council houses will be transferred to a newly-created social landlord which will manage the houses and make the necessary investment into the stock.

The option of the council keeping the homes was rejected by consultants.
