TURKISH leader Rauf Denktash tells us that Greece and Turkey could go to war if Cyprus joined the EU. This does not augur very well for the proposed expansion of the EU with countries from eastern Europe joining.

Does this not send a message on attitudes to the European Commissioners? But will they listen and take heed? When it comes to the enormous expansion of the EU that is in the pipeline, we read in "The West Midlands - A region of the EU (7)" - I quote - "The EU seeks to reduce the economics divergences between its poor and rich regions through its restructuring aid."

Does this mean that countries like the UK (which is already a net loser) have got to start losing out further to the poorer countries from Eastern Europe? This may seem the Christian thing to do, but in the real world will it not cause animosity and create another east-west scenario?

Will it not all end up with the people and not the politicians getting their way, with countries going back to being on their own with their own governments just as the old USSR has done, and as it should be.
