A SITE of Special Scientific Interest which had been earmarked for a road scheme, has been turned into a nature reserve.

Hurcott Wood and Pool was owned by the Highways Agency which planned to run the Kidderminster, Blakedown and Hagley by-pass through it.

But the project was withdrawn and with a £25,000 grant from English Nature, Wyre Forest District Council was able to buy and develop the land.

"This site was acquired in the spring and we have been working hard to create the reserve and make it accessible to nature lovers," said Councillor Frank Baillie, chairman of Wyre Forest District Council.

"We're delighted to have the opportunity to manage this fantastic site that provides a new and beautiful recreational resource."

Keith Miller, Highways Agency divisional director, said: "This is the first opportunity we've had to put an initiative of this type into operation anywhere in the country."

The area is now open to the public and a second phase of work will be carried out next year, to develop its potential for conservation management.
