MALVERN U13's first away game of the season took them to Monmouth where they played in the short period of dry weather before the wind and rain set in.

MONMOUTH U13's 24pts, MALVERN U13 'PIRATES' 12pts

It was a match where the Malvern boys showed, in brief periods, what a fine team they can be. But as the early Malvern dominance faded, Mon-mouth took the initiative with an unconverted try after 15 minutes.

Malvern counter-attacked from the re-start with both Will Bowen and Gareth Preston crossing the line but failing to score. A fine run from winger David Morgans was held up on the line, but two quick tries from Monmouth gave them a 19-0 lead.

After half time, there was a renewed sense of purpose in the Malvern camp and with a spirited performance they won the second period by two tries to one.

Both tries were scored by fly half John Brierly, who converted one himself, thus scoring all of Malvern's points.

The man of the match was scrum half Rhys Coles.

This Sunday, the 'Pirates' return to Spring Lane for a friendly against Birm-ingham Exiles. Kick-off is 11am.

MALVERN Under 12's played their first game together, and they undoubtedly found themselves up against a seemingly well-drilled Monmouth side who won 20-7.

Despite some stout defending from Malvern, Monmouth scored three unconverted tries in the first half.

The second half saw Malvern with a re-organised scrum competing effectively against a very strong Monmouth five.

The Malvern backs then cut through the Monmouth defence and Andrew Tighe on the wing, cruised over the line to score a morale raising try, which Tighe successfully converted.

The squad is looking forward to their next match against Dudley Kingswinford on October 21.
