A HORSE chestnut tree that has stood for decades as one of Colwall's most distinctive landmarks is to be chopped down.

A magnet for the village's conker-loving children over generations, the tree's days are now numbered after it was declared unsafe by Malvern Hills Conservators.

The tree, at the junction of Walwyn Road and Brockhill Road, was identified as potentially hazardous during a recent survey by the Conservators.

The Conservators' conservation officer, David Whitehorne, said: "It's extremely sad that such a distinctive, mature tree should have to be removed but a professional aboriculturalist undertook the survey and it would be negligent not to take his advice".

John Price, a Conservator and local resident, said he had fond memories of the tree from his childhood and that it would be a sad day when it was felled.

"However, everything has its lifespan and for the sake of public safety I realise it must come down," he said.

Colwall Parish Council is planning to organise an event based around the tree and its history for villagers before it is faces the axe.
